Construction Update 06: Significant Headworks and Oxidation Ditch Construction Completed

Construction of the new sanitation plant continued to make steady progress this week. The new headworks building now includes completed pipes, rebar, and wall forms after a recent concrete pour. The clarifier began water testing, while the oxidation ditch neared completion. A new manhole connected to the future gravity main, and the dewatering building prepared for upcoming pours.

Our office remains open during regular hours — Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Headworks Progress: Pipes and Rebar Set, Concrete Pour Complete with Wall Forms Installed

An aerial view of the construction site, showing significant progress at the headworks. Rebar is fully installed across a large grid-like section, with additional formwork in place for walls. A covered structure sits at the upper part of the site, indicating areas prepared for concrete pours or protection from elements. The surrounding area is cleared, with visible tracks and some equipment on site.

Aerial view of a construction site with concrete recently poured in the headworks area. Several wall forms are installed, with some tools and materials scattered around the site. The covered structure remains in place, while construction equipment and wooden planks are visible, indicating ongoing work. The area around the site is mostly cleared, with a few construction materials and panels on the ground.

The first picture of the Headworks shows all the pipes and rebar in position, ready for the concrete pour. The second photo captures the completed pour, with some wall forms already installed.

Clarifier Water Test Begins: Rare View of Basin Before Final Backfill and Scum Pit Installation

Aerial view of a clarifier filled with bright blue water, marking the start of a water test. The circular concrete structure is surrounded by dirt and excavation, with equipment and safety barriers nearby. This test provides a rare look at the clarifier basin before final backfill and further construction work, such as the installation of the scum pit.

Above, we see the water test beginning for the Clarifier. This is the only opportunity we will have to observe the bottom of the clarifier with water in it. The backfill we discussed last week will occur later, as we still need to form and pour the scum pit.

Oxidation Ditch Nears Completion: Walls Set with Few Sections Remaining

An aerial photograph of a large, circular concrete structure in the middle of a construction site. The structure appears to be a water treatment facility, with a central circular opening and concentric rings forming a basin. To the left of the structure, there is a large, circular pool filled with blue water. To the right, there is a smaller, rectangular building with a flat roof. Construction equipment, including cranes and excavators, is visible on the site.

The oxidation ditch is really taking shape this week, with nearly all the walls set and formed, leaving only a few sections to complete.

New Manhole Installed for Gravity Main to Headworks, Groundwater Managed with Multi-Hose Setup

An aerial photograph of a construction site with a large orange excavator digging a trench in the dirt. The trench is long and narrow, and there are several pipes and other construction materials visible along the sides of the trench. A pile of rocks and a few smaller pipes are visible in the top right corner of the image.

Another manhole has been installed and connected to the future gravity main that will feed into the headworks. Rice Lake West has been working diligently to keep groundwater out of this area, given the clay layers in the soil. As you can see, multiple hoses are being used to manage the water.

Dewatering Building Progress: Forms and Rebar Set for Upcoming Pours

An aerial photograph of a large construction site showing a partially built concrete structure. The structure has a large, curved wall and a smaller, rectangular section. Several smaller concrete structures and piles of dirt are visible around the main structure. Construction equipment, including cranes, is also visible on the site.

The dewatering building has more forms and rebar installed, preparing for future concrete pours.

Beautiful Views from Niwot Sanitation

A panoramic aerial photograph of a large water treatment facility under construction. The facility is located in a rural area with fields and trees visible in the distance. Several large concrete structures and pools of water can be seen within the facility. Construction equipment, including trucks and cranes, is visible on the site.

Here’s another stunning view of the project as the seasons change.

What's next?

The headworks will have forms and rebar installed for the surrounding walls. At the clarifier, Rice Lake West will set forms, install rebar for the trough, and remove shoring and backfill as needed. The Oxidation Ditch will continue with final wall section form-setting, while the attached Aerobic Digester will have rebar wrapped with forms and the first wall poured. Finally, Rice Lake West will continue laying the gravity main and installing manholes.
