The District charges a flat rate based on the number of taps per location. The rate does not depend on the type of dwelling or facility, which includes condos, single-family homes, and industrial complexes.
The District uses the industry standard developed from decades of study to assume the amount of wastewater homes discharge. Sewage cannot be metered like water because it contains toilet paper, solids, and other materials. The assumption for a single-family residence is 2.54 people per home with an average daily wastewater discharge of 60-70 gallons per day. An estimate of 2.54 people per home multiplied by the assumed 65 gallons per day equals 165.1 gallons per day that each single-family residence discharges to the sewer. The standard monthly discharge allowance is 4,953 gallons, calculated by multiplying 165.1 gallons per day by 30 days.
The Niwot Sanitation Rules and Regulations allow homes to discharge up to 7,800 gallons per month using a single tap. This is more than the industry standard allowance.
Each tap within Niwot Sanitation District incurs the same fee for up to 7,800 gallons of discharge per month. This applies to any size of unit, home, or building if they use 7,800 gallons per month or less. If they exceed this amount, they must buy another tap.
