About Us
The Niwot Sanitation District was officially established through an Order and Decree signed by the Court on September 25, 1967. The driving force behind the district’s formation was Howard Morton, a local farmer who was concerned because outhouses and septic tanks were contaminating groundwater. Niwot Sanitation District is a local government entity under Colorado Special District Title 32 guidelines. The district does not receive funding from property taxes. It finances all sewer treatment activities through bi-monthly fees.
It is governed by an elected five-member Board of Directors comprised of Niwot community members. The District Manager reports to the board of directors and handles the daily operation of the District.
Niwot Sanitation District is responsible for the collection and treatment of wastewater from the Niwot community. Operations include collection system maintenance and repairs, operation of the plant, including adherence to all federal, state, and local treatment requirements, capital improvement savings, and administration. The District's service area is about seven square miles, which serves 2,346 homes and businesses. It has gravity-fed wastewater lines with over 900 manholes.
